regen: Initiating a New journey to Reduce Carbon Footprint
With strengthened global unity and responsibility in response to climate change, the expansion of carbon reduction regulations centered around the EU and individual countries is interconnected with our product sustainability initiatives.
Commencing in October 2023, the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Policy (Carbon Tax), applied on a trial basis, imposes taxes on the carbon emissions embedded in all products imported into the EU. This regulation aims to minimize the social costs of climate change. Furthermore, the heightened awareness of sustainability among nations, corporations, and individuals necessitates enhanced transparency in the handling of both ecological and human rights aspects deriving from raw materials.
Taking responsibility for our society’s sustainable future, Hyosung TNC has assumed a leading position in the development of certified eco-friendly products to help reduce harmful carbon emissions among various industries.
To support our position, we have launched a rebranding initiative to enhance the market presence of our existing ‘regen’ recycled product brand. Through this rebranding program, we are broadening the scope of our sustainable product line beyond recycled products, which contribute towards carbon reduction to include products made from renewable resources such as bio-based and bio-degradable materials.
Utilizing Renewable Resources Found in Nature
Hyosung TNC is at the forefront of advancing sustainability and the circular economy beyond traditional recycled fibers, aiming for the 'Next' phase. We proactively seek out renewable resources with a focus on carbon reduction from the initial raw material stage. In 2021, we pioneered the commercialization of regen Bio-Based spandex - a global first. Looking ahead, we are committed to further enhancing carbon reduction by extensively utilizing renewable resources, with a target of achieving 70-98% utilization of renewable materials by the end of 2023.
World's First Commercially Available Spandex Born from Corn
Hyosung TNC achieved a groundbreaking feat by introducing the world's first commercially available spandex partly made from renewable resources derived from corn. Our regen Bio-Based spandex, a sustainable material that mitigates carbon emissions and eliminates resource scarcity concerns, is crafted from industrial corn cultivated through USDA-certified sustainable agricultural practices. It demonstrates performance on par with our conventional CREORA products.
Innovative Solutions for Sustainability: Advantages of regen Bio-Based
1. World's Sole Production of Spandex Utilizing Renewable Resources
In 2021, Hyosung TNC pioneered the commercialization of regen Bio-Based spandex, utilizing renewable resources, marking a global first. We are showcasing the exclusive regen Bio-Based spandex production technology to our global mill and brand partners worldwide.
2. SGS ‘Eco Product Mark’
regen (are we capitalizing the brand name at the start of a sentence or not?) Bio-Based spandex has been obtained the Eco Product Mark certification for BIO by SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance). Through the certified QR code, you can easily confirm that the product utilizes BIO materials, is safe for human use, and is produced based on ESG management.
3. Reduction in Carbon emissions and Water use
regen Bio-based Spandex has been subjected to third-party verification through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to measure its actual carbon reduction impact. The production of one ton of regen Bio-Based Spandex results in approximately 20% carbon reduction and roughly 50% decrease in the water use compared to production of conventional spandex.
